Oakland-born artist @Ducewa drops his latest high-energy slap “Gold Hooptie”, directed by Maggie Rudisill and Dosa Films! He aims to bring a different sound on this one and talks that sh*t over a grandiose synth-driven beat! In just under 2 minutes, Ducewa manages to create a work of art. We had a chance to talk to Ducewa about his process behind “Gold Hooptie”, and what to expect from him in the future in the interview below. Read on

Thizzler: Where are you from? How was your upbringing?
Ducewa: I’m from East Oakland, the 30’s. I moved to the DMV when I was around 13, and it never felt like home at all. While I was raised by single mother, my upbringing was a little unique. I was raised in a place were none of my friends were actually from, Columbia MD, which is in between Baltimore and DC, we made it our home, but I always claimed Oakland. Creator of The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder, based that show off of his upbringing there. A place were wild ridiculous things happened where they shouldn’t.
T: How did you begin making music?
Ducewa: An old friend of mine, Claude was showing me FL Studio in the early 2000’s, making his own beats and selling mixtapes low key. One of my best friends, artist ABFIFI, was already rapping back home in Oakland, early in the MySpace era. My friends use to joke about how I kinda beat boxed tunes from video games, commercials, and random songs from all genres, and even TV shows. So I thought why not put that energy into beat making, and producing. Popular YouTuber Swoozie gave me a big look, using some of my beats, in his videos. The most notable song I’ve produced is ABFIFI feat. Beeda Weeda and Kingpin’s “The Town” which ended up on Complex.
T: How did you get your rap name?
Ducewa: My rap/artist name is my real name spelled wrong, so people could pronounce it correctly. Plus there’s no other rapper with that name, easy choice.
T: How would you describe your musical style?
Ducewa: I don’t really have a style, or I could just say I’m versatile. I’m more of a creative, attacking music from all angles, starting with Rap/Hiphop.
T: Tell me about “Gold Hooptie”.
Ducewa: This is my third single, the name of this song, simply refers to the car I currently drive, gets me everywhere from A to B, nothing fancy at the moment. My original idea for the video, had the car in it, but for certain reasons I had to shoot it completely different than what I planned smh.
T: What inspired this new single?
Ducewa: The song “Freaks and Geeks” by Childish Gambino, was the inspiration. Imagine if Childish Gambino, and Mega Man had a kid, and the kid was a beat, this is what it would sound like. It’s an old beat I did 7 years ago, I recently loaded it back up and flipped it.
T: How is it different than previous drops?
Ducewa: What makes it different, is how much more aggressive it is than past songs, it also has a bigger sound to it.
T: Is it part of a project? If so, can you tell me more about that?
Ducewa: No, no projects it’s apart of, this single will be its own thing, its own force.
T: What message do you want fans to walk away with after listening to “Gold Hooptie”?
Ducewa: I want people to walk away ready to accomplish their goals, with aggressively positive energy, if that even makes sense. Anything from running on the field for a game, or going into work in a office. Get that energy up!!!
T: What’s next?
Ducewa: I have 3 more singles I have planned to release, one of them I want to pitch to who ever is in charge of the music department for the show “P-Valley”, I won’t reveal to much, I’ll leave it at that.
T: Is there anything else you want to say?
Ducewa: Get out of your own way, get out of your head, and DO THE WORK! Don’t be afraid to try anything new. Originally I wasn’t supposed to be rapping, my brothers Gonzo and ABFIFI, gave me the gas to hop on my own work, so here I am. You’ll miss out on party’s, nights out, kick backs, girls etc. All that’ll come with the pay off, just stay focused.
