We linked up with Portland’s Mo1B the Key to talk about his recent release “Can’t Sleep” with Lil trev! He recently signed to Atlantic Records and has deep roots and soul ties with R&B. He’s got his new song is playing on national radio LIVE 97.5 from 5-6pm PDT. Thizzler: Where are you from? How was your upbringing?
Mo1B the Key: I’m from Portland, OR and I grew up in the “Flats”. The Flats is a grimy place! There’s a lot of drugs, sorrow, and empty promises. I’ve found that if you dig deeper under the surface you’ll find the key that’s needed to make it out and, that’s exactly what I did.
T: How did you begin making music?
1B: I started singing in the church choir when I was about 8 years old. My moms would make me sing every Sunday! People just loved my voice so much, so I just started putting rhymes together, and next thing you know boom!
T: How did you get your rap name?
1B: I walk with God, you feel me. “Mo1B” stands for “Make. Others. Believe.”, and the 1B stands for 1body, 1love, 1family.
T: How would describe your musical style?
1B: One word: versatile. I definitely have that R&B soul type vibe down! I also come hard with this mobbin’ too! You feel me! All around the board, you want it, 1B gonna deliver.
T: Tell me about “Can’t Sleep”.
1B: I recorded “Can’t Sleep” at one of the lowest points of my life! I was battling with depression, trauma, and some family deaths at the time, and I just could never sleep. I was always in my head. I didn’t really have anyone to talk to about some of this sh*t. Shout out to my “Lil Trev” for showing support and lending an open ear!
T: What inspired this new single?
1B: Pain.
T: How is it different than previous drops?
1B: Before “Can’t Sleep” I never really mixed my singing with rap. This is definitely a game changer for me as 1B.
T: Is it part of a project? If so, can you tell me more about that?
1B: It was going to be a song on a EP me and Lil Trev was working on. Things got so hectic so I ended up just dropping it as a single. EP still on the way though, 1best believe!
T: What message do you want fans to walk away with after listening to “Can’t Sleep”?
1B: Don’t give up! Real talk you can make it out! You can’t let all those sleepless nights be for nothing! It just takes the right person to hear your story and the rest is history! Manifest your reality.
T: What’s next?
1B: I have a few mixtapes on the way! I’ve been getting some pressure about dropping a my first album so, who knows. I’m also bringing my label to light at the end of the year! “F.G.A.” is about to take over the game, just watch! Â Other than that I’m just mobbin; day by day, you know? Everything else is in Gods hands So with that said. We blessed!
