@dbboutabag is back with his new album Just Levels. The new release marks DB’s third full-length effort since dropping his debut Bag Klan Misfit last year. On the 11 track offering the South Sacramento rapper has clearly grown from his first release. The topics generally cover money chasing, his women conquests, and trust and loyalty.
At 20 years old, DB is more reflective of the world around him. He’s lost some loved ones and he questions whether he can trust the people he thought were closest to him. On “Crunch Time” he says “my brother snuck my brother, how the f*ck I’m supposed trust mine. You don’t n*gga”.
On the India Arie sampling “Slight Vent”, DB. considers his loyalty to those who have not shown the same level of commitment to him. “f*ck I look like dying for you when you won’t die for me?” He needs to see loyalty demonstrated because he’s seen the results of disloyalty.
Another thing anyone who’s heard DB’s previous releases will notice the shift in his production choices. He’s rapping on more sample-based beats. “No Spanish” flips a salsa record for a turnt up function-ready slap. “Fronto Man” flips a slowed and pitched down R&B sample while DB. speaks of his preference to smoke with fronto leaves over any other options.
On his latest outing, DB worked with RawMit, Savage.Eb, SpaceOnTheBeat, Saul and Dom Bailey. In under a year, DB is beginning to make good on the promise shown on his first release.
