You may have heard by now that the Oakland Unified School District is cutting 10 out of 20 after-school sports at Oakland high schools to combat what it says are massive budget problems, saving them $500k in funding. Some of the sports cut include wrestling, swimming, bowling, tennis, golf, girls lacrosse, badminton and boys volleyball. Sports help teens to become better contributors to society.  Research shows a child’s involvement in sport helps them to improve their social interaction, increase their confidence, and improve their listening skills and health. Participation in sport is linked to higher grades, lower dropout rate, reduced truancy and lower crime rates.
It’s a really important issue to us. Because it’s important, we’ve decided to do our part in fundraising for the cause. We’ve opened a Go Fund Me campaign in order to raise the money needed to save the sports programs that have been cut. We feel that it’s very important for kids to have positive outlets and Oakland should be trying to add more options, not get rid of them. Our goal is $500,000 to replace the entire amount that has been cut, but any amount will help. All money raised will go to bringing back these sports.
We ask that you give what you can. Every little bit counts!
