Fresh - HD & The Worlds Freshest

Much has already been written about HD here, but he just came out with a new album last week produced by DJ Fresh that is his biggest release yet at the height of his hype. Did he take it to the next level or did he swing and miss? Let’s find out together in a song-by-song breakdown of the album:

1.) Cost of Living

The album starts with the track that was on a youtube sampler posted a few weeks ago. One of the reasons I think so many people were looking forward to this album is that HD’s beats are not always up to par with his raps and with a DJ Fresh-produced project you are guaranteed quality beats. This song has a pretty typical DJ Fresh feel to it with a laid-back vibe and retro inspired sound. It sounds really good and HD includes a handful of ‘SMACK SMACK’ ad libs, which is always appreciated.

2.) Didn’t Kno

HD raps in this song that his dick tastes like chicken, which is a statement I don’t think we should ponder here. This song is about HD sleeping with women (and paying him) that he didn’t know were married and their husbands now want to fight him. If I had a dime every time this happened to me in real life I would have so many dimes! One thing I like about HD is that his songs about women/sex are not super retarded and gross to listen to like many other rappers (I’m looking at you J. Stalin). The beat is pretty cool, frantic synths in the background and some interesting percussion sounds working their way in too.

3.) 2 Liters ft. Hen Sippa, G-Dirty & B-Stroll

This song’s beat reminds me of another song (possibly by DJ Fresh) that I can’t place. Help me out readers! Hen Sippa starts this song off with his monotone, lifeless tone that has grown on me more than I’d care to admit. Hen Sippa also handles the chorus and rhymes ‘presents’ with ‘present’ and ‘presents’ with ‘presence’ twice all within one chorus lol. Super impressed by that. HD goes hard in this song, wish his verse was longer though.

4.) All on You

This song has an old-school feel to it and uses an Al Green sample as the central element of the beat and chorus. The song has a nice atmosphere to it and it’s good to hear a true solo track with HD.

5.) Back

Another old-school soul sample in the beat, this time from a Marvin Gaye song, but the music has an eerie and apocalyptic feel to it. Real interesting beat, I’ve never heard HD rap over something like this, it sounds different, but good. HD goes hard on this song too, “time to take action and quit prayin’ for peace,” fuck yeah…
