Throwback Slaps by 100 Grand On My Wrist

Oh hi! My name is Thomas and I really like Bay Area rap music. I run a blog by the name of 100 Grand on My Wrist, Yeah Life Sucks and after months of negotiations between our team of lawyers, me and Em Dub have teamed up to bring some of my posts here to Thizzler for you to read and enjoy. Topics will range from Bay Area rap to more Bay Area rap. Hope you enjoy them!

We now tune in to a post bringing you some quality Bay Area raps from back in the day:

E-40 ft. Spice 1 & Keak Da Sneak “Ring It”

Off E-40’s 1996 Hall of Game, the chorus for this song is “If it’s major, hit me on my pager…” extremely dated technology references FTW! If anyone wants to hear a good example of how much Keak Da Sneak’s voice has changed, listen to this song and then anything he has released in the last few years; his voice is barely raspy at all on this track. What has Keak been doing to his vocal cords over the years? Also I’m not up on Spice 1’s entire discography but this is easily the most relaxed and least hostile I have ever heard him on the mic. He raps “Pager going off like C-3PO” on this song, which makes absolutely no sense to me in any sort of way. Anyways, this song is tight along with the rest of the album and has a lot of things going for it besides confused Star Wars references.

Calvin-T “$ Maker”

Speaking of E-40, do you know who Calvin-T is? Hailing from Richmond, CA he was one of the original Bay Area rappers from the 1980’s. E-40 mentions him frequently in his interviews as one of the few rappers who influenced his style and listening to Calvin-T you can hear how much of an impact Calvin-T’s style had on rappers like E-40 and Mac Dre. This song was recorded in 1988 on a LP split with Magic Mike, which only had like ten test presses released, so this song is really rare. The song comes from that era where people would just be rapping for five plus minutes on their songs (see early Too Short for more examples of this) and Calvin-T raps for six minutes straight here and even goes through the entire alphabet letter-for-letter in this song (!!!). This song slaps kind of hard, which is surprising considering how old it is…
